Annual Elf Convention EndsPosted by Elf Ernest on Monday, 22nd October 2007 at 8:27AM
Every October thousands of reindeer-powered sleighs take to the skies at the same time from the North Pole. It is everyone's favorite road trip.
From around the world they gather. From Australia, elves working for Santa at remote South Pacific tracking stations come to participate. From China, elves working to secure parts for toys and tools for the workshop take leave to come to the event. From South America, Africa, Europe and the United States elves join their co-workers from the North Pole to meet in one secret location to have a very special annual meeting.
It is the Annual Elf Convention.
How many elves come to this event is something we really don't know. Usually, Santa doesn't even tell us where we are going. And some of us never really figure out where we have been.
One year, Santa took us to the mountains of Peru. Another year was spent on a beach in the West Indies. And this year, I think we were in the deserts of Mexico.
But it doesn't really matter where Santa gathers us as elves. The Elf Convention is a time to get schooled in the fine art of being an elf. And every year it is all about Christmas.
This year we attended classes that taught us about Christmas traditions. Santa said that in order for someone to become a good elf they have to know why we do the things we do at Christmas and what all the many symbols mean to kids and families around the world. The convention taught us a lot of things and I think you will see us pay a lot more attention to the symbols and meanings of the season in our work this year.
The Annual Elf Convention is also a time of fun for elves. We play games, have contests and drink a lot of egg nog. Mrs. Claus stays home at the North Pole during the Elf Convention. She says it would be too big of a distraction if she was there. So we do not eat a lot of cookies at the convention. Someone always brings alot of them or tries to make them but we've all had Mrs. Claus' cookies and nothing else compares.
We have squirt gun battles, water balloon fights, bubble gum blowing contests and lots of arm wrestling. It is a time for competition and for brotherhood.
But it is also a time for business. Santa is very concerned about Christmas 2007. He said more families are in need this year of merriment than ever before. He said that as we mix with kids, answer their letters and talk with them when we see them that we should encourage kids everywhere that it isn't the quantity of gifts you receive at Christmas or even if you get a gift at all that is important. In fact, Santa stressed that we need to teach kids to have fun this Christmas and to share ideas with them about how to make others feel good at this time of the year.
It gave me a lot to think about for the Santa Updates we write this year.
We're home now, back at the North Pole. And all are getting excited for the Annual Halloween party. It's a big deal here every year. Elves love a good party and nothing is so much fun as dressing up and acting silly.
Plus, Halloween means that Christmas is just around the corner.
Please check back here often -- the Santa Updates of 2007 are about to become much more frequent.
