Visiting the Purchasing Department

The Purchasing Department is my first new department visit of the year.

We have been charged in our elf training for this year to visit other departments and learn what they do. I had never heard of the Purchasing Department until Elf Ernest told me about it so I decided to put them on my list.

Thousands of elves work in the Purchasing Department. I had no idea. How could I miss such a large and important group of elves?

Just as the name suggests, the Purchasing Department buys stuff.

You see, the North Pole might be the perfect location for Santa to deliver from but it is not a great place to get things. Few things grow here. There’s so much snow on the ground here year round we cannot typically find resources used in making things such as wood, metals and even water (ironic isn’t it? We have all this snow but no access to water. The North Pole is a funny place.) So we have to buy things from around the world so we can make the stuff of Christmas.

The Purchasing Department has thousands of elves because they have to go to countries all over the world to find and then to buy what is needed at the North Pole. They buy things like plastics, batteries, small nails and all kinds of wire. It is not just limited to the things used to make stuff, either. They buy the stuff of elf life such as textiles to make clothes, leather for the seats of sleighs, and even food for the reindeer.

Yes, we have some things we try to grow here at the North Pole. In a future report I’ll tell you about the North Pole greenhouses at Kringle Farms. These are state-of-the-art growing facilities that raise hay, oats and other things that reindeer and elves eat. They grow our carrots and beets and lettuce and stuff we eat. But even to do all that the Purchase Department has to keep them supplied with fertilizers and even dirt.

If there is something any department at the North Pole needs it is the job of Purchasing to go out and get it.

Remember the big tape shortage from last Christmas? Well, that turned into a special project for a group of elves in that department. They spent months trying to find tape from all over the world and finally succeeded when they found a supplier in Thailand who was a big believer in Santa and who wanted to help. They read about the need right here on SantaUpdate.com and worked with the Purchasing Department to get what was needed.

Santa has friends all over the world and the Purchasing Department is part of the reason why he has so many friends.

Anyway, check out the radio report Elf Frank and I did earlier today for Kringle Radio, in the player below.

And let me know if there are any special departments at the North Pole you want me to visit for future North Pole Radio News reports.
