Vixen is not doing well.
Elf Victor, head elf of Reindeer Operations at the North Pole, said in North Pole chat yesterday that Vixen is “iffy for Christmas Eve”. He explained that her surgery last summer was more serious than expected and that her recovery is slow.
Even participants in the chat questioned what that means for Santa on Christmas Eve. If Vixen cannot go, who takes her place?
The News Department has been asking that question too. Every time we talk to the Reindeer Operations Department they refer us to North Pole Flight Command.
But North Pole Flight Command elves, when asked the question, refer back to the Reindeer Operations Department.
The truth is, from what we can determine, is that Santa will be making that decision. And clearly he is not around right now to evaluate Vixen or speak to her availability.
By tradition, Santa usually releases his list of starting reindeer and the back-up team of reindeer about 24 hours before flight time.
