21 Weeks Until Christmas

Hi guys! We now are down to 21 weeks until Christmas. Our countdown is shrinking!

Santa is out of town. He’s technically test flying that new sleigh – code named Daisy (which is a name I really like, I hope she does well). But his purpose is to visit the Regional Tracking Centers in Sectors 2 and 3.

Whenever Santa goes out of town that puts the responsibilities of Santa on the shoulders of Mrs. Claus. And because Mrs. Claus has been leading a lot of the Christmas in July events at the North Pole she’s been behind on some things.

All that means it has been a super-busy week for me as we catch up on Operation Merry Christmas in Santa’s absence.

We are in Phase 3 of Operation Merry Christmas – the one called Getting Down to Work. This is the longest part of the year because it goes all the way until Halloween. Between now and then, we’re making lists and checking twice on everything. Everything we’re doing is basically “to get ready”. Santa’s workshop makes toys, the Wrapping Department wraps them, and then they get sent to a place where they are organized and warehoused until it’s time for the Delivery Phase of Operation Merry Christmas.

Seems simple, right?

Well, it’s not.

Whatever Santa has going on with this crazy new sleigh is affecting that simple job of getting the stuff Santa delivers organized. It cannot be done the way it has been done in the past because of the new sleigh.

Now, don’t ask me why. Even if I understood it I couldn’t explain it.

This new sleigh is changing the way everybody here does their job. The elves have to work different and the reindeer have to work different. Evidently some things are even changing for Santa.

Then there’s me. My job is to run the office of Mrs. Claus. I do a little news reporting on the side but really my job is to help Mrs. Claus. Well, guess what? Even though it is Mrs. Claus’ goal to stay home this Christmas Eve and to focus on family and the elves at the North Pole, she cannot escape this new sleigh either – which, by extention, messed with me.

She is Santa’s backup. If Santa can’t fly on Christmas Eve, guess who goes down your chimney?

That’s right, Mrs. Claus.

She’s never had to do that. Santa has always been there. She’s helped him a time or two. But she’s never had to do it herself.

But it remains a possibility. And since it is possible she always has to prepare.

So, Santa’s gone right now test flying the new sleigh. Some time after he gets back Mrs. Claus will start her certification process in the new sleigh. No problem, right?

Well, it’s a big problem.

Some scheduling dork in the office of test flight planning at North Pole Flight Command has scheduled Mrs. Claus to certify in the new sleigh on August 28th.

That’s the day before the wedding!

All this came out in a meeting yesterday and I was there with Mrs. Claus who just nodded her head as this was all announced. But when the words “August 28th” came out of his mouth I just about lost my gingerbread.

Seriously. I just said, “no, she can’t do that”.

Everyone stopped. It wasn’t Mrs. Claus speaking, it was me. Lil old me. Just an elf. Just the woman controlling Mrs. Claus’ calendar. Everybody was kind of in shock. I’ve never spoken up before in a moment like that. Mrs. Claus is accommodating for everyone so for me to speak up like that took everyone off guard. Elf Dork, the scheduling dude, just said “Why not?”

I looked at Mrs. Claus. She looked at me. Then the bells went off in her head. Her eyes got real big and she sat straight up in her chair.

“She’s right!” Mrs. Claus blurted out. “It has to be at least five days before or three days after August 28th”.

That was specific. And that was coming from Mrs. Claus. Elf Dork could only swallow hard and say “Yes, ma’am”.

We have less than a month now. I’m going to go crazy before this is over, I just know it.
