Summertime Believers

Summertime Believers

In the world of sports there’s this thing called “fair weather fans”.

It is a term that generally means a follower is a fan of a team only when they are winning.

In our world here at the North Pole our version of a “fair weather fan” are those who say to one group of people they believe in Santa only to say to another group of people that they do NOT believe in Santa.

Frankly, Santa and the elves at the North Pole really do not care if you believe in Santa or not.

Seriously.

If you don’t want to believe in Santa that’s okay. Go on your way, have a nice life. Merry Christmas, we say. Whatever.

But what we continually observe is that those who do not believe in Santa think it is okay to give those who do believe in Santa a hard time.

Make it make sense.

Why would anyone waste their time being critical of what another person believes?

Do we see this in other things?

If a person who likes apples talks to someone who doesn’t like apples, is there an effort from either party to argue over apples?

No, of course not.

The Apple-liker, when hearing the Apple-hater doesn’t like apples, likely just says “oh” and moves on.

But it doesn’t work that way with Santa.

If you don’t believe in Santa you are likely to give those who do believe in Santa a hard time.

We don’t understand that.

After all, you never see anyone who believes in Santa bashing the non-believers.

They might be sad about, yes.

But rarely do we hear of a Santa believer who goes around berating non-believers.

Why is that?

I think it is because belief in Santa is not about the things Santa brings a believer. Presents are not it, when it comes to belief in Santa. People don’t believe in Santa because of the stuff. People believe in Santa because he thinks of other people all the time.

That’s what non-believers just don’t get.

Believing in Santa means being a good person and doing nice things for others. It’s a belief in giving.

And it is hard to argue with that.

Let me say that again.

It’s hard to argue with being a good person and doing nice things for others.

That is something you can believe in year-round. All the time. Day and night.

Belief in Santa is like that. It’s good all the time. Even in the summertime when Santa seems so far away from anyone’s thoughts.

Summertime believers in Santa are simply the best.

They are hopeful. They are positive. They are excited to think that Santa is coming again. They look forward to seeing the smiles on faces when Santa is around. They love the glow of anticipation get when people realize Christmas and Santa are coming.

Everything is different at the North Pole in the summer.

Yes, there are reminders all around us that we’re at the North Pole and that Santa lives here and that as elves we work for him.

Santa always wears red. We have some year-round Christmas trees. Christmas music plays year round on the radio and candy canes are never not available. Yes, our Christmas vibe is strong at the North Pole.

But like everywhere else when it isn’t Christmas at the North Pole it just is different. Just like everywhere else.

But summertime belief in Santa overlooks all that. Belief is Santa is magic no matter what time of year it is.

In the fall, usually after the children have all returned to school, Santa starts receiving wish lists and emails and messages, all conveying what the writer wants for Christmas.

The mail is totally different to Santa (and the rest of us) during the summer.

We tend to get more diverse questions about Santa in the summertime:

Does Santa go swimming? Is Santa a camper? Does Santa play ball, ride bikes, or play with squirt guns?

These are the summertime questions about Santa that we get.

And we just love those questions. We try to answer them all we can.

Questions like that reflect true belief in Santa Claus not only because they do not talk about what they want in their Christmas stocking but more importantly they reflect belief in Santa that’s not centered on stuff.

So keep asking those questions. We love them. Santa loves them.

And we want to answer them.

And the next time someone wants to argue with you about your belief in Santa we have this advice: just don’t.

Don’t argue with a non-believer. Not ever. It’s just not worth it.
