Santa Performs a Special Task
Santa Claus put on his full Christmas suit for a special task today.
He had an appointment at the Sleigh Department today that required him to show up dressed exactly as he does when he flies on Christmas Eve.
The reason he did this is because they are working on the new seat for Santa’s sleigh that he will sit in when he takes off.
It is not an ordinary seat. It is custom made for Santa. That is why he had to wear the suit today for the engineers in the sleigh department. In order to make the seat as comfortable and functional as possible Santa needed to wear the same suit he will be flying in at Christmas.
First, wearing his suit, Santa gets measured. They measure Santa standing up and sitting down. They weigh him. They have him sit in a special chair where they make him simulate flying the sleigh while standing up and sitting down.
They measure his arms and how far he has to reach when he is handling the reins or adjusting the controls on the sleigh dash.
Their goal is to minimize Santa’s movements.
The concern is for making sure that when Santa is in the sleigh that he is as comfortable as possible and that he expends a minimal amount of energy as he flies the sleigh.
Santa’s flight averages a little more than 30 hours each year. That does not sound like a lot but it is actually a really long time – more than a full day!
That is not only a long time to be flying but it is a really long time to be so busy.
So making sure the seat in Santa’s sleigh is “just right” is very important.
Santa is very patient with this process. He understands why the engineers right now need his time to do this.
After all the measurements are taken they will make three new seats. Then they will have Santa return to test them out. First they will look at Santa in the three new seats to see how they did. They will have Santa again simulate flying. They will get his feedback.
After a full day of doing this they will make one more new seat and put it in a special test sleigh that Santa alone will fly maybe once or twice.
That day is scheduled to happen sometime in late September or early October.
The new seat for Santa’s sleigh is supposed to be completed by October 11th this year.
Once it is done it will be duplicated for all the test flights of the sleigh scheduled from October 11th forward.
In some years, the new seat affects the overall performance of Santa’s sleigh. That is why is has to be done in early October – it gives the test pilots time to fully test the sleigh with the new seat and make changes to the sleigh if necessary.
Santa’s sleigh is so far right on track for this year.

Does Santa wear a seat belt or have a safety strap attached to his suit? I can see why testing his seat is very important in keeping him comfortable and safe since he doesn’t always stay seated. Im sure it’s a challenge keeping him warm and cool during temperature changes. Happy testing!
Thank you, Elf Harold! Wow, it’s very special news! I wonder if Santa’s body shape changed. His suit on Christmas Eve is very special. I’m curious what kind of materials they will use for protecting him in any weather and temperatures and keep him in the sleigh seat without a seatbelt! I look forward to hearing the update. Stay healthy and safe, and Merry Christmas! 🎅🌟😊
