Baby Reindeer Everywhere

There has been a baby boom at the North Pole. There are more baby reindeer than anyone expected this year.

North Pole

They were expecting so many that a special circus-like tent was put up between the Reindeer Barn and the Sleigh Barn. That tent is full to over flowing.

They have now taken over the Staging Barn at the North Pole Sleigh Port to handle more of the baby reindeer. The Staging Barn is where the reindeer wait on Christmas Eve before they are hitched to the sleigh. It was built to protect them from the weather and it is big enough to handle thousands of adult sized reindeer.

The challenge with the baby reindeer comes from organizing their feeding times. They are not like adult reindeer, who can wait between meals for a fairly long time. If a baby reindeer isn’t fed on demand, they will cry.

So having food and water accessible to them all the time is really important.

The young babies – those under 3 months old – are really just learning to run. They can’t even jump yet.

But the reindeer older than 3 months can jump and many actually try to fly.

Having these mixed together is kind of chaotic. Baby reindeer, like young children, tend to fall down a lot as they learn to walk and to fly.

Baby reindeer do not exactly sleep on a regular schedule, either. Many are up at night and sleep during the day. As you can imagine the areas where these babies are kept can be noisy and very busy.
