Feeding Santa and the Reindeer on Christmas Eve is on the minds of many writing in to the North Pole these days. We will help you know what to do.

Feeding Santa and the Reindeer

Feeding the reindeer is really important. Unfortunately, too many people leave food out the reindeer they never should. Remember, the reindeer are very athletic animals with a big job to do for Santa. You don’t want to feed them anything that might disrupt that.

So, rule #1, is to make sure they have plenty of water. Not soda, not fruit punch, not eggnog, not wassail or any other special holiday drink you may have at your house. Just water. This is what they love and it is really what they want after flying hard to get to your house.

Rule #2 for the reindeer is that you need to feed them natural, whole vegetables and grains. Stay away from sweets, especially candy canes. Candy canes will upset their tummy and it given too much it will make them sick.

For the best results, try to leave them carrots, celery or apples. They love these and consider them treats. For something more substantial, if you have some regular dry oats they love to eat that too. (But NOT instant oatmeal).

Now, for Santa, yes, we do recommend cookies and milk.

What’s the best kind of cookie? We talked to Mrs. Claus who had a lot to say on this subject. She told us:

“Santa loves just about any kind of cookie but he really prefers homemade cookies to store-bought cookies,” Mrs. Claus said. “Homemade cookies just do not have as much sugar and other stuff in them that Santa doesn’t like. And if you are going to make your own recipe cookies, Santa loves these the best. He says he can taste the love in them. I will give you this one cookie-making tip from my kitchen and we follow it religiously. If you use butter in your cookie recipe please make sure it is unsalted butter that you are using. Salt makes a cookie hard and it dries out the other ingredients. Unsalted butter in a cookie recipe will keep it soft and delicious.”

Milk is even getting a lot of questions today. Regular whole or 2% milk is what Santa prefers. He does not like fake milk such as almond milk or soy milk. He wants real milk. It is full of protein, which helps Santa keep up his energy. Please stay away from Oat Milk, Goat Milk, Buttermilk, 1% Milk, Cashew Milk, Rice Milk, Coconut Milk or Skim Milk.

Finally, did you know there is a thing known as the Cookie Desk at North Pole Flight Command?
